‘Universities are part of a social life-world, and the social life-world needs to be represented in the universities as well’

About The Project

Many degree programmes currently include advanced module options and discrete topics related to gender and feminism.
However, these often exist as ‘add-ons’ and may be framed in binary or non-intersectional ways, hampering the wider efforts to increase inclusivity, equality and diversity in higher education curricula and teaching.

This research project set out to interrogate and address current curricula and teaching, looking for good practice and opportunities for development via three qualitative case studies in the humanities, social sciences and physical sciences.

The project demonstrated that there is wonderful practice that we can benefit immensely from sharing more between us, but we cannot ignore the absences that still remain. The imperative to incorporate gender and wider aspects of identity is – and must be – a collective endeavour. We are all responsible for making changes for the better and in doing so informing the gender equality contribution that higher education can make to the rest of society beyond its ‘ivory gates’.
